One day out of the valley

The Gastein Valley offers, in summer and winter, a large number of activities to fill weeks. But also outside of the valley there are numerous opportunities to discover the province of Salzburg.

The enchanting baroque city of Salzburg is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With about 150,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in Austria and an important cultural, trade fair and congress city, internationally known for the annual Salzburg Festival with world-famous artists. It is now included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

During a stroll through the old town are numerous attractions. Fortress Hohensalzburg, Salzburg Cathedral, Salzburg Residenz, the carrillon, Mozart Square, Pferdeschwemme (horse pond), Mirabell Palace, Hellbrunn Palace with the water games and not to forget, the Getreidegasse with Mozart's birthplace, which can be visited as a museum.
Whether on foot, in horse-drawn carriage, by boat, by bike, by bus, alone or accompanied by a Salzburg City Guide - a trip to Salzburg is an absolute must and is a lasting experience.

Welcome to the Alpine kingdom of funny ghosts! The mountain alpine theme park for the whole family, the perfect hiking experience in the spring, summer and autumn. With the gondola it goes up to the ghost mountain spirits into ghost village
For the little ones: from the speaking ghost door, Spuki & Gspensti lead you in the 4 worlds of earth spirits, fire spirits, water spirits and spirits of the air. Where is the snoring dwarf, what is the dragon doing?

For the older: Alpine Amusement Park with swings, bird nests, climbing dragon, ghosts tower, water games, ghost lake, shooting galleries, …

For the all-time greats: surefooted hiking trails and relaxation at the Feen plaza.

Eisriesenwelt (Ice Giant World)

The largest ice caves in the world, the unique natural wonders close to Werfen, is a protected natural monument. You descend, and then ascend, 134 meters during the visit of the ice cave. Undoubtedly compensates the beauty of the ice sculptures and the impressive dimensions of the cave for the effort!
Sturdy shoes and warm clothes, hat and gloves, are necessary.

From the parking lot you walk about 20 minutes to the cable car, the way from the cable car to the cave is another 20 minutes walk. The tour itself takes about 1.5 hours.

Tip: An absolute “must see”! It’s also destination for a rain day or for cooling on a very hot day.

Hohenwerfen Castle

For over 900 years the mighty Hohenwerfen Castle enthroned on its steep, 155-meter high rock cone above the Salzach Valley. A castle tour includes a visit to the castle chapel, the pitch kitchen, the armory, the battlements, the bell tower and the adapted princely room. Visitors can gain exciting insights into medieval life.

Tip: The mystical castle tours, demonstrations of falconry and visit of Austria's first Falconry Museum are a must! A half-day should be planned.

The gorges Taxenbach and Liechtenstein

Impressive and fascinating - A trip to one of the gorges. Natural wonder with idyllic bays, spectacular bridges and footbridges. Some of the rocks are so close to each other that the sky is only recognizable as a small strip, at some points, light and shade are almost ghostly. Waterfalls shoot through the towering, jagged cliffs down the ravines with unrestrained power, in the sparkling water haze sunbeams dance like little elves.

Tip: A trip really special for the whole family. For each gorge schedule at least 1.5 hours.

Großglockner and Heiligenblut

At 3,798 m Großglockner is the highest mountain in Austria. The Pasterze, the largest glacier in Austria sprawls at its foot. The dream of every climber is to stand next to the magnificent, gold decorated cross on the summit.
The famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road leads you into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. 48 km long, 36 bends and an ascent to 2,504 m - you pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, massive cliffs and eternal ice. The ultimate goal is the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs Höhe.

Tip: The tollgate in Bruck is 45 km away. If you drive along the entire High Alpine Road on the Carinthian side, pass Heiligenblut, down again, cross the Möll valley and then take the Tauernschleuse back to the Gastein Valley, you have driven about 165 kilometers and experienced a wonderful day trip. Incidentally, Heiligenblut is referred to as the most beautiful mountain village in the Alps. According to the legend, in the parish church is kept a vial containing blood of Christ. Especially worth seeing is the Gothic high altar.
